Frequently Asked Questions

Can therapy really help me?

Therapy can provide support, validation, teach you coping skills, and ways to change your perspective and your behaviors. It can give you rest and empower you to change. Your therapist creates a safe, non-judgmental space for you to express yourself authentically and may understand you in a way that no one else has. When this happens, it is extremely powerful and transformative.

Therapy cannot change your past, your current circumstance, or other people. Therapists provide psychoeducation, feedback, and guidance, but they don’t always give advice or  answers. If you’re new to therapy, or are exploring unprocessed trauma, therapy may make you feel a bit worse before you feel better.

I can’t tell you how long it will take for you to feel better. But, in general, the more you put into therapy, the more you’ll get out of it.

What is your fee?

Our rates are competitive with those of therapists around the Valley. Currently, our fee is $150 for a 50-minute session.

Do you accept commercial insurance?

Empower Family Therapy accepts HSA payments, but does not accept insurance at this time. If you have an insurance plan that includes coverage for out-of-network providers, Empower Family Therapy can supply you with monthly invoices (superbills) that you can submit for reimbursement (typically this covers a good percentage of the fee). Check with your plan directly to verify your coverage.

Do you offer a sliding scale?

We believe that therapy should be accessible to everyone; for this reason Empower Family Therapy reserves a limited number of reduced-fee weekly appointments (based on financial hardship). Please contact us to discuss further.

How will I know if you are the right therapist for me?

This is an excellent question to ask! You are dedicating time and resources and want to be sure you are picking the right person. Research and experience tell us that the fit between you and your therapist has a major impact on progress. You should consider logistical factors (office location, availability) as well as personal factors (your therapist's training and expertise, personality, and 'the feel' you get). An initial phone conversation should be able answer some of these questions - I suggest that you come up with a few questions that will inform your decision. I know you will get a clearer idea of who I am after we chat on the phone. The first couple of face-to-face sessions can continue to inform your decision and we can talk about any ongoing reservations or concerns you might have.
